Arrival Task 2- Genre and background+setting
ARRIVAL
GENRE & BACKGROUND AND SETTING
Arrival is a science fiction movie, which that Linguistics professor Louise Banks lead an elite team when spaceship touchdown in 12 location around the world.
MAIN CHARACTOR,
DR. LOUISE BANKS ,
A LINGUIST.
Secondly, Louise Banks is a linguist, she can communicate with the alien by using those kind of circle symbol that the alien written it out. She slowly analyze it and understand what the alien trying to say, and she can use back those symbol to communicate with those aliens. After knowing those kind of symbol, Louise Banks becomes more proficient and has the ability to see and think of future (like : what happen to her daughter sooner later).
Arrival is set in a realistic world with more concern about free will and personal responsiblility. The objectives of this film are mainly focused on communications in many levels such as different languages and cooperation to understand on aliens. It used the combination tenses of past, present and future to reflect shifts in time. It is not time travel but existing both inside and outside of time.
The climate of the film is in spring, judging from the setting in the USA where the greenery is still plentiful. The aliens cannot live outdoors and they are in dangers. This is because they are living in a world where there are militaries planning to attack the spacecraft.
Besides that, the people are fully aware of their surroundings and are part of that surrounding and society. They are all living as a society and there are hierarchies in which to keep it balanced, each therein playing a seemingly insignificant role to prop up this frail norm facade. For instance, all the workers at the spacecraft are wearing space clothing and having a high level of awareness except Louise ;
she is the one who sincerely treats and transcends the barriers of communicating with the aliens. Whole story is Louise Bank is acting patiently in communicating with Abbott and Costello (the aliens),
she did it in details for every step when understanding the new language and teaching them our human language, which we know from the movie what we so call as the power of language.
The people in the film make a living in an economy like us, each with a specific yet individually insignificant role in society. Louise works as a linguist and Ian works as a theoretical physicist in the film than the government and military with a democratic system hold the arrangement of main power in the film. The leading roles in this film have sufficient knowledge and information towards the circumstances they are facing, which are powerful and handle everything well.
From others view, the film is related to mundane ritual. It is a ritual where humans work, communicate with people, spend time with families and hang out socially which all are acceptable. In this global economy world, global and universal ethnics are a necessity. Socially acceptable actions and those deemed legal under the state of law or even religious and family education are what strings the ethics together, limiting their lives in a controlled bubble, all seeking individuality yet proven time and time again to just be manufactured to be part of society.
The setting of this film is seemingly similar to ours, taking that as an indication. They are all trapped within the fabric of their own making, which subconsciously succumbing to societal norms.
In conclusion, emotional play a big role in this world which a human being must have the emotion when facing something. A human cannot live in a world that is unemotional all times, take action on and decision making let us feel pressure due to emotional. Other than that, leisure time is a must to let us entertain ourself which creative and performing are important to human characters. In society, there are still people who willing to put all out of their power in order to change the world into piecefulness. And, communication is very important, a single misunderstanding of words it might become big issue.
