Ornamentation in Architecture
"Do the right thing in the right time"
This is what I get after read the article "Ornamentation and Crime" written by Adolf Loos.
Is the ornamentation is a crime?
For me, it is not all the ornamentation is a crime.
The only crime is the wrong timing but not the ornamentation in architecture.
"Architecture"
The ornamentation used to be the important part in architecture.
But it is only happened in the old age time.
Every age bring different kind of ornamentation.
It is representing the history of the different ages.
"Role"
What is the role of the ornamentation?
This is the topic that always bring attention from the people.
People will judge everything by the role take it take part.
Especially in nowadays, this is what we concern.
In our era, people will try to understand everything that they bought and willing to listen about the background or story of a object. The background and the story will brings the value on the object. Same situation on the architecture nowadays. Compared to the old time, I wound not say people just judged everything from the single perspective but most of the time they did. For the example, the Victorian style had ejected by the people, the ornamentation in the Victorian style representing the wealth.
Architecture brings culture or culture brings architecture? What is modern that we thought in our era? Is the architecture nowadays representing a culture? For me, architecture is very important in our history and civilization. The architecture will brings us the memory and story behind of every era. We barely see this characteristic in our architecture today. This is the modern time that have a lot of different style in architecture, some of them based on the culture, some are not.
This is the famous building that well known in Malaysia, Sunway pyramid shopping mall. In Malaysia, we have different races of people with different religions. But the Sunway pyramid shopping mall designed in the Egyptian style but not the Malaysian style. The pyramid of that shopping mall have the totally different function from the landmark, pyramid in Egypt. Will we considered this shopping mall as the heritage that same with the "real" pyramid in the Egypt.
This is the JKR Tower located in Kuala Lumpur. It looks modern in this era. It is also catching our eyes on the incredible facade. Is the twisting facade brings any story, culture of Malaysian. Is that really necessary to have the twisting facade. Is the facade brings function or just a ornamentation that people have created these days?
In my opinion, all the ornamentation is fine with the reason. There is nothing wrong that if the ornamentation will brings the happiness to people although it in not function that we expected. If there is a chance to let me publish an article, the understanding of design will be my topic as well.
The deprival of rights to design is the issue that we should have a attention on it. In the "ornamentation and crime", there is a scene that brings a lot of emotion to me about the cobbler. "He is happy because rarely does fortune enter his house and he has been given work by a man who understands him, who appreciates his work and who does not doubt his honesty."
