Materiality and Immateriality

Architecture will always create something in the reality, the environment or the world in many ways maybe in the way of materiality or immateriality. “Materiality” and “Immateriality” in architecture will always be seen in different ways, especially when the world is moving towards modern era which can produce more beautiful product or high quality material which the materiality and immateriality will become a question for it. Decision of an architecture should always have good idea for the things they have decided which materiality and immateriality will always be represented and be seen in different ways in Architecture based on the human feels and human vision on it.

What is the role of materiality and immateriality in architecture today?

Materiality is the truth of the material thus having the truth function of it. The role of the materiality in architecture today are the concept use to applied of various materials or substances in the body of building. Other than that, in materiality it also consider as nature which they also build or make of “raw material” use it for the building. Materiality can be visualize and also can be touch which build construction having this kind of way. Material is a term in architectural design and so may be used to designate materials which are considered to be visual such as photographs, images or text. It has it’s strength.

Immaterial is such that are without material form and without material substance. It’s untouchable, conceptual and also known as unimportant which are not material. But immaterial is as important as materials. Immaterial is formless and can be classified as senses and also such things like space.

Is all about human perception, human perception on materiality towards sensory of see and touch example ancient architecture create a strong and solid building. Human perception on immateriality towards sensory of space example lighting to light up the spaces .

Materiality in today, which highrise building doesn’t make use of the 5 senses. Which most important in materiality are based on the sensory of see and sensory of touch. It design only provide the visual look and the construction method, it doesn’t care about the function or others thing in it. Mainly focus on using the nature “ raw material” at the building envelope or the façade decoration that human can feel it by touch or see.

Immateriality is an idea where material is an object. It doesn’t have material substance which there are based on sensory of space. Human can also feel it in the building by using the 5 senses and having the space in the building connect with outside environment which can form the feeling like inside and outside relation to form the immateriality.
