FORM AND FUNCTION
What is the relationship between form and function in architecture today? How are new uses, technologies, and materials changing the relationship between them?
Architecture will always create or design something that are reality, in environment or the world in many ways maybe in the way of more focus on form or the way of more focus on function. “Form” and “Function” in architecture will always be use in different ways, especially when the country is moving towards the limitation of land. Decision of an architect is always important to have good idea for the things they have decided.
FORM
Shape or configuration of a building. The reciprocal relationship is essential, given the intention of architecture to provide internal sheltered space for human occupation. The importance of form is perhaps one of the most contentiously debated subjects in contemporary architectural discourse. Every single building plays an important role because the form gives the first impression to the users and it can attract and provoke human visual sensation based on its exterior form. Form tells people what the buildings are and the characteristics of of it without entering the space.
FUNCTION
A building or a space is well said as based on the purpose of it , none of the space is being ignored or wasted in use , is a matter of confusion and controversy within the profession, particularly in regard to modern architecture. In architecture is the essential act that an object, ideas or space should carry out, which can also be simplified as the "usage", in terms of structures, ornaments, surfaces and openings of every particular building.
Function ever follow form...By Louis Sulliva
"All things in nature have a shape, that a form, an outward semblance, tells us what they are, that distinguishes them from ourselves and from each other”. Architecturally, the form of every single building plays an important role because the form gives the first impression to the users and it can attract and provoke human visual sensation based on its exterior form. Contemporary architecture should have its form which primarily based on its intended space. It is an art based on the principles of Utility and Beauty.
Contemporary Building.....
Building design use of form follow function. Framing House, designed by FORM/ Kouichi Kimura Architects, located in Japan. The architecture is pared down to the essentials, with very little ornamentation. The result is very clean, without unnecessary distractions
The client requested to have a space that can be used as a gallery in the house in addition to the habitable space. The request triggered creation of characteristic spaces within the building.
The characteristic passage laid out from the street through the back of the building functions as the line of flow to the habitable space and the gallery. Consisting of the semi-outdoor passage space, gallery, and habitable space, all of which are framed and depict themselves, the house creates affluent linkage within the living spaces.
The passage space frames the courtyard connected to the back, giving perspective to the external appearance. Moreover, as a semi-open-air space, it allows multi-purpose use while playing a role of linking the habitable space and the gallery, which makes the living spaces richer.
Building forms tend to be more invisible as users turn to the World Web for activities that was once achievable only through physical interaction. Nowadays as human are adapting more towards computer , buildings are just becoming a matter of platform for storing.
“Function follow form”
Just like the wooden house in cubes design by Son Fujimoto. The building concept is more relate to "function follows form" because the architect came out his own concept based on his analysis of surrounding first, then only implant different function or human used of space into his design. The users have to carry out their activities based on different form in every different amount of the space given. From my opinion, I think some spaces are appropriate and suitable for human anthropometric, but perhaps some spaces might not that user friendly.
In conclusion, no matter “form follows function” or “function follows form”, the relationship between them is still tied together. The relationship of it on the building is eventually decided by the designer and building team based on the project properties and requirements, so that the output gives the new images for the public with the richness of spatial qualities and experience. We are now heading approach the future architecture , it is an unknown world with lots of probabilities , Form and Functions are two basic terms in every single building . Which one comes first is not important , how successful they blend in into each other is the most concerning point nowadays.
